The radiolysis of neopentane has been studied in gas and liquid phases. It was shown that, in the liquid phase, the iso-C4H8+ion reacts at least as quickly with isobutene as with methylcyclopentane. The t-C4H9+ion reacts at least 10 times more rapidly with isobutene and the main reaction is one of resonant transfer of a proton with isotubene; fewer than 5% of the t-C4H9+ions add to isobutene. In the gas phase, the condensation reaction is more important than that of resonant proton transfer since proton transfer represents only 30% of the total reaction: Finally, the resonant transfer of a deuteron occurs about 2.9 more slowly than proton transfer.
