Abstrakt: Microphocaena podolica, gen. et sp. nov., is described from lower Sarmatian deposits (upper Miocene) in Ternopol' Province. The deposits are dated by an associated mollusc fauna, which indicates low salinity. The skull of the porpoise preserves a number of features in common with the modern Azov porpoise, leading the authors to agree with Abel that the modern porpoises derive from mid-Miocene phocaenids. --F.C.
