Abstrakt: In the course of an aerppalynological study, during 1983 to 1985 in Samedan (High-Engadin), large amounts of Castanea pollen were found in the samples. These amounts vary between 6.3% and 14.5% of the annual total pollen catch. The altitude of Samedan is 1705 m above sea level. The nearest important Castanea forests are situated quite far away in the Southern Alps, and always at altitudes below 1000 m. At Samedan more than 61 % of the Castanea pollen are caught during the night with a maximum count at midnight. These observations indicate strongly that Castanea pollen is carried by the “Maloja-Wind” from the extensive Castanea forests of the Bergell valley to the High-Engadin.
