A new genus? Pterodex, is erected and its type species? P. carolliae, described. Pterodex, of all known demodicid genera, is most closely allied to Demodex.Gross evidences of P. carolliae infestations are noted as sluggish host movement from roost, weak flight and whitish areas of skin of the elbows. Histologic details show the mites burrow body-sized pits in the epidermis and beneath abnormally multilayered keratin. Although mites, all stages, are rarely touching the dermis, moderate to intense, abnormal and unexplained, leucocyte infiltration is found in the dermis below and beyond the sites of infestation. |
