When to parallel circular cylinders are in close proximity, mutual interference effects generate large lift forces on both cylinders. A great deal of effort has gone into the task of determining a physical explanation of the lift force. This note describes a series of experiments aimed at further clarifying the nature and source of lift forces on two parallel circular cylinders with a smooth surface positioned at a right angle to approaching flow direction. It is found that changing the relative size of two bodies had a marked influence on the force profiles. This is attributed to displcement of the wake of the upstream cylinder by the downstream one. It is suggested that any flow parameters of the wake, measured without the presence of the rear cylinder when attempting to assess the forces thereon, is an oversimplification of the situation, as far as the lift is concerned. |
