A new method, based on the combination of four techniques (gas chromatography, infra-red and ultra-violet spectrophotometry, thin-layer chromatography), is applied to the determination of aromatic amines in rubber vulcanisates. Even small proportions of these amines are frequently considered as responsible for professional dermatitis, and it is important to ascertain them in complex mixtures. The powdered rubber is acetone-extracted in a soxhlet apparatus. By means of acetone, n-hexane and nitromethane-n hexane, the amines are concentrated in one fraction. The latter is then analyzed by this coupling method using the separating power of an analytical chromatograph to allow the identification of the main non-volatile components of a mixture. |
