Abstrakt: Summary The mechanism of the phenotypic expression of a cyd mutation of poliomyelitis virus manifested by marked decrease of infectious virus particle yields in the absence of cystine, was studied. Cystine was shown to exert no marked effect on the synthesis of viral RNA. Mutant virus particles are extremely thermolabile, this being evident under conditions which reveal dependence of viral multiplication upon cystine (34° C, pH 7.6). Treatment with cystine results in stabilization of virus particles.
