Presentation of some somatic and psychological problems of intermittent hemodialysis and kidney transplantation in children, with reference to the history of a girl 14 years old at the time of her death. Seven years after the onset of a steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome, chronic hemodialysis and (4 months later) a kidney transplant were performed because of progressive kidney failure. Rehabilitation was greatly retarded by medical complications, but 2 1/2 years after the transplant a steady improvement in the medical, sociopsychological, academic, and family spheres was possible. After 1 1/2 years of well-being, and extensive rehabilitation, the girl died of acute cryptococcus meningitis. The questions of the decision on dialysis and kidney transplantation, preparation for surgery and rehabilitation are discussed. |
