The position of the catheter inserted into the umbilical vein for exchange transfusion or fluid therapy was checked by X-ray examination in 49 newborns. Only in seven patients did the catheter reach the vena cava inferior or the right atrium, the positions one generally aims at. So far the high percentage of faulty positions has rarely been pointed out; we feel that it could be one of the reasons for complications. |
