The results of a study of the system UF4–CaF2, using thermographic, x-ray diffraction, and chemical analyses are presented; these results were used as the basis for constructing a fusibility diagram of UF4–CaF2. Uranium tetrafluoride forms solid solutions with calcium fluoride with a maximum solubility of the former of 42%. An increase in the content of uranium tetrafluoride in the solid solution is associated with an increase in the crystal lattice period from a=5.45 A to a=5.56 A. The system contains one chemical compound, CaUF6, which possesses a hexagonal crystal lattice with periods a=3. 997 A and c=7.103 A and melts at the temperature 1008° C. The compound CaUF6 belongs to the diffraction class D6h=6/mmm; its unit cell with volume V=98.27A3, contains one formula unit, x-ray density 6.62 g/cm3. |
