Abstrakt: Hydroboration of an unsaturated bond such as in olefins, acetylenes, carbonyls, and imines and complex formation of the resulting borane with Lewis bases such as ethers, sulfides, amines, and phosphines are two important reactions of boranes in organic synthesis. Novel types of boron-containing polymers were prepared through a new polymerization method utilizing these two reactions; hydroboration of olefin and amine-borane complexation. Monomers having both an amino group and an olefinic double bond react with borane to form N?B coordination bonds by amine-borane complexation and C-B covalent bonds by hydroboration. Repeat of these reactions resulted in novel boron-containing polymers that involve both C-B and N ? B bonds in the main chain. Various monomers were used for polymerization and molecular weights up to 22,400 were attained. The polymers are soluble in polar solvents such asN,N-dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxide, and hexamethylphosphoric triamide.
