It was shown that the fatigue strength of steel parts depends on the degree of purity of the steel and on the machining method. Thus, the fatigue limit determined for specimens of a high-purity steel ground with a corundum wheel was not very much higher than that obtained for a standard arc-melted steel of the same composition. After fine turning or grinding with a diamond wheel (both of which lead to the formation of etch-resistant layers on the specimen surface), however, the fatigue limit of the high-purity steel was, respectively, 32 and 25% higher than that of the standard material. |
