Abstrakt: Analysis by atomic absorption spectrophotometry has shown the distribution of heavy metals in the yellow‐legged gull Larus cachinnans míchahelliscollected on the French Mediterranean coast.Zinc and copper are the major metals, followed, in decreasing order, by cadmium, lead, mercury and nickel.Affinities with organs were revealed: cadmium and nickel with kidneys, mercury and zinc with liver and kidneys, lead with brain and kidneys, while copper was rather widespread. The lowest rates were found in muscular tissues.Heavy metals were also found in eggs with rates often high in the embryos.Heavy metal contents seem rather high for some samples compared with other studies on sea birds and other marine animals. The origin and toxicological results of these metal contents are discussed.
