Abstrakt:	1.A scheme has been proposed for the nitration of methanol by aqueous HNO3 involving N2O5 and NO2 which accounts for the change in mechanism and reaction order relative to the alcohol.2.The equilibrium constant for the ionization of N2O5 and the rate constant for the reaction between NO2+, NO3- and H2O were evaluated.
