Abstrakt:	1.According to the data from x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, the electron density on the S atom in sulfonium salts is reduced by ~ 0.1 e in comparison to the corresponding sulfides.2.Reactions involving alkylation by sulfonium salts are subject to orbital control, and the variation of the electrophilicity of the S atom established from the x-ray fluorescence spectra is in good agreement with the alkylating ability.
