Abstrakt: 1.A study was made of the reaction of phenol witha-methylstyrene and styrene in the presence of H3PO4, polyphosphoric acid, BF3·OEt2, Al(OPh)3, and HO3CCO3H·2H3O.2.Thea,a-dimethylbenzylphenols are formed by the aralkylation of phenol with the monomerica-methylstyrene carbonium ion, which is formed both froma-methylstyrene and during the degradation of its oligomeric cations.3.Thea-methylbenzylphenols are formed by the reaction of phenol with the monomeric styrene carbonium ion, which is formed directly from styrene.
