Abstrakt: 1.The possibility was investigated of the replacement of isopentane by nitrogen as a phlegmatization diluent for acetylene in its condensation with cyclopentadiene in a flow apparatus, and it was shown that the yield of norbornadiene is maintained at its former level.2.An investigation was made of the relation of the yields of norbornadiene and by-products to temperature in the range 250–375‡, to pressure in the range 7–17 atm excess, and to space velocity for the feed of cyclopentadiene in the range 0.05–1.1 h-1. It was found that the optimum conditions for the process are: temperature 340‡, pressure 13 gage atm, rate of feed of cyclopentadiene 0.25 h-1. The yield of norbornadiene is then 65% on the cyclopentadiene that reacts.3.The amount of resinous products formed in the reactor does not depend on whether isopentane or nitrogen is used as diluent and is about 0.5% on the amount of cyclopentadiene passed.
