Abstrakt: 1.The reaction of 1,2-hexamethyldisilylethane with a series of metal halides was studied. FeCl3 is a reagent which cleaves the Si -C bond in the disilylethane grouping, while Al2Br6 and Al2Cl5 catalyze a poly condensation, which proceeds with the liberation of Si(CH3)4 and the formation of a polymer with disilylethane groups in the chain.2.The reaction between Al2X6 and 1,2-disilylethanes containing various numbers of Si-Cl and Si-CH3groups was studied.3.Two possible polymer-formation schemes are proposed for the polycondensation observed. Data were obtained supporting an intermolecular mechanism for the formation of a dimer (from R3SiCH2CH2SiR3 · Al2X6 and R3'SiCH2CH2SiR3' with the liberation of R3gSiR').
