Abstrakt: 1.The spectra of N-vinyllactams and anilides were studied. An interpretation was given of the frequencies of the double bonds and peculiarities in the spectra which reflect the mutual effects of groups of atoms In these molecules.2.In the double bond region of the spectra of N-vinyllactams two lines were observed, one belonging to the C=C bond and the other to the C=O bond. The C=O frequency is lowered almost to the same extent as in molecules containing the bond system > N-C=O; it is clear that, here also, we have the effect of nitrogen on the rigidity of the C= O bond.3.Anomalies in the intensities of the Raman lines of C=O and C=C form the most notable peculiarity of the spectra of N-vinyllactams and distinguish them from molecules with the bond systems C=C-N < and > N-C=O. These anomalies are regarded as the result of mutual effects of double bonds acting through nitrogen in the bond system C=C-N-C=O. They are in accord with the peculiarities of the absorption spectra. Similar relationships are found in the spectra of anilides.4.Alkylation at nitrogen in anilides weakens the manifestations of conjugation of nitrogen with the benzene ring and strengthens those of conjugation with the carbonyl group. This gives reason to suppose that in molecules of the type C6H5NRCO-X the coplanarity of the system C6H5-N-C is disturbed, but the system C-N-COX becomes more planar.
