Abstrakt: 1.Ethyl 2-thenyl sulfide is metalated by butyllithium in the 5-position. The structure of 5-(ethylthiomethyl)-2-thiophenecarboxylic acid was established by its conversion into dimethyl 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate.2.In the acetylation of ethyl 2-thenyl sulfone with acetyl chloride in presence of stannic chloride, the acetyl group enters the 5-position. The product was shown to be 5-(ethylsulfonylmethyl) thienyl methyl ketone by its conversion into 5-ethyl-2-thiophenecarboxylic acid.3.The bromine of 5-bromo-2-thenyl ethyl sulfone is not replaced by lithium by reaction with butyllithium and is not replaced by a nitrile group when the substance is heated with cuprous cyanide.
