Summary 1.An investigation was made of the reaction of demethylation of o-xylene with associated methylation of benzene over a synthetic aluminosilicate catalyst. It was shown that at. the optimum temperature of 525°, at a rate of feed of 0.5 volume of o-xylene per unit volume of catalyst per hour, and for a reaction cycle of 50 minutes the application of pressure directs the process toward maximum formation of toluene, the yield of which comprises 27–28% on the amount of catalyzate.2.In the formation of toluene, not only is the demethylation of xylene important, but also the associated methylation of benzene. A little toluene is formed by the disproportionation of xylene. o-Xylene undergoes isomerization to a considerable extent with formation of m- and p-xylenes.3.The isomerization of oxylene was studied. It was shown that maximum isomerization over a synthetic aluminosilicate catalyst is attained in the temperature range 450–500°. In a single passage of o-xylene, 50–60% of it is converted into p- and m-xylenes. The xylene fraction of the catalyzate contains 22–23.5% of p-xylene. |
