Abstrakt: Summary 1.Increase in the catalytic activity of preparations obtained by treatment of silica gel with solutions of aluminum salts is not proportional to the increase in their exchange acidity, for the ability of active aluminum ions to undergo exchange increases more rapidly than the number of these ions.2.Silica gel acquires catalytic activity as a result of replacement of hydrogen ions by aluminum ions in hydrolytic hydroxy groups only.3.Activation of silica gel by treatment with solutions containing basic aluminum salts is considerably more effective than activation by application of alumina.
