Summary Since October 1961, 2064 operations the implantation of pacemakers were carried out in Düsseldorf. Based upon a clinical material of 1000 patients, the special indications for pacemaker therapy in 122 are discussed. The indications are mainly disturbances of the source of the cardiac impulse and its transmission within the area of the atrium, and the treatment of tachycardia which does not respond to other forms of therapy. Special stimulation techniques used in 1763 pace makers up to now are discussed, the latest technique in form of a bifocal atrio ventricular “demand stimulation” in the case of an intermittent sino-atrial block is presented. A stimulation technique using two pacemaker systems is also mentioned, in which a myocardial fixed rate stimulation and a pervenous “demand stimulation” are used to control cardiac function, as a safety measure. |
