Summary From 1953 to 1966, 585 of 877 patients with carcinoma of the lung were treated conservatively and 292 were treated by pulmonary resection. Reexamination periods are differentiated by determining the indication for surgery with the aid of improved pulmonary function tests - 1953–1956, 1957–1960, 1961–1966 - and the surgical 5 years cures are compared to those of the world literature. Re-examination of the pulmonary and performance volume shows that these are usually inadequate as indication criteria and for the selection of patients. |
