Abstrakt: The applicability of the easily performed thermal washout technique for determining myocardial blood flow was tested at varying coronary flow rates in anesthetized open chest dogs. Sudden changes in temperature of the perfusing blood were induced by quick injections of iced saline, saturated with 133Xe. It was found that values obtained with the thermal washout technique were unreliable, when the coronary blood flow was less than 80 ml/min · 100 g. With higher coronary blood flow, this technique gave results which were comparable to those obtained by the more complicated washout of xenon. The linearity of the latter was checked by electromagnetic flowmeter.
