Abstrakt: Using NMR, electron microscopy, and resistometry, specimens of Al+0.03% Fe and Al+0.10% Fe quenched from temperatures of 903–923°K (in water) and subjected to “gradual” annealing at 633–733°K are investigated. By analyzing the results it is shown that the process by which particles of the second phase (FeAl3) are formed by decomposition of a supersaturated solid solution of Fe in Al has a heterogeneous character. Dislocation loops of the vacancy type “decorated” with segregations of iron atoms can act as nucleation centers of the particles of the second phase. These loops are obviously formed during the quenching process mainly due to “condensation” of “vacancy-iron atom” complexes.
