Abstrakt: An ecological and physiological study ofI. chelipesfrom Lake Veere, The Netherlands, was made. Both osmoregulatory capacity and survival decrease with increasing temperature as well as with decreasing salinity.Respiration experiments suggest that the need of energy by osmoregulatory activity may be supplied at the cost of other physiological processes, at any rate at temperatures of 10°C and higher. It may be expected that, if temperatures higher than 15°C and salinities lower than 8‰ coincide, the population ofI. chelipeswill be affected negatively.
