Abstrakt: Duodenal epithelial cells of chicks (White Leghorn; normal, rachitic and vitamin D3 replete for various time intervals) have been studied at the electron microscope level. The depletion of vitamin D led to a decrease while the repletion caused a subsequent increase in the length of microvilli of the brush border, in the number of apical pits and vesicles, in the size of the Golgi complex, the amount of rough endoplasmic reticulum and in the relative number of secondary lysosomes. As these morphological changes parallel, in the time scale, the previously described physiological effects of vitamin D on calcium absorption, it is suggested that these might be correlated.
