We exploit the general formalism devised in Part I of this paper to analyze, from a quantum statistical viewpoint, the multimode instability in absorptive optical bistability. Below instability threshold, the incoherent part of the spectrum of transmitted light presents sidebands in correspondence with the cavity modes. On approaching threshold the sidebands, which correspond to the modes that are becoming unstable, exhibit line narrowing and thus herald the rise of the instability. Beyond threshold, the behaviour of the system is governed by an equation formally identical to the Risken laser equation. |
