The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a drawing programme devised by Grant Cooke, an advisory arts teacher. The programme involved 10 lessons based on a 'negotiated drawing' approach and was administered by Cooke to two classes of children aged from 5 years 3 months to 7 years. The drawings of children in this negotiated drawing condition were compared with those of children in three further conditions. It was predicted that those in the negotiated drawing condition would improve most, since over and above the merits of the approach itself Cooke is also an experienced art educator dealing with young children and, furthermore, is very enthusiastic about and committed to his own approach. In contrast, it was predicted that the drawings completed by the children taught in the normal way by their own class teachers would show least improvement. Similarly, it was predicted that the normal drawing lessons given by Cooke would not lead to a marked improvement in the children's drawings. Finally, an improvement in drawings was predicted when the lessons were given by a supply teacher specially trained in Cooke's approach, although it was anticipated that the effect might not be so marked as when Cooke himself gave the lessons. The results showed that children in all conditions improved their drawings over time. There was also evidence that the children in the two groups who completed the programme of negotiated drawing improved their drawings more than the two groups who were given normal drawing lessons. |
