1.Nitriding of titanium steels in ammonia induces the formation of diffusion coatings whose properties depend on the ratio of titanium to carbon.2.The best results are obtained for steels with Ti/C=6.5–9.5. The case on these steels is not brittle and has good adherence to the base metal.3.With Ti/C>9.5 the case is brittle and easily broken due to the precipitation of high-nitrogen phase in the grain boundaries and slip planes, and also the diffusion of hydrogen.4.The case depth varies exponentially with the nitriding temperature and parabolically with the nitriding time at all temperatures and ratios of titanium to carbon investigated. |
