Abstrakt: 1.The cooling rate (in air, and slowly in sand) has no substantial influence on the decomposition process of martensite during tempering. After rolling, the slabs can be conveniently cooled in air.2.The maximum decomposition of martensite in steel 10Kh16N4B is attained in tempering at 580–600°C.3.Cracks form in slabs in the presence of untempered martensite and layers of finely dispersed carbides in the grain boundaries. Local stresses in combination with the lower strength and plasticity of the grain boundaries create conditions for the nucleation and development of brittle cracks.4.On the basis of our investigation we recommend that slabs be cooled in air to 20°C after rolling, with tempering at 580–600°C and cooling in air. No cracks are formed under these conditions.
