Abstrakt: Summary 1. The subpellicular location of the silverline system is electronmicroscopically demonstrated for the first time by means of ultrathin sectioning of wet silveredColpidium colpoda. Accordingly, the widely accepted theory ofPitelka (1961) that Klein's silverline system is formed in tetrahymenid ciliates by deposition of silver at adjacent alveolar membranes should be abandoned. 2. The electronmicroscopical findings confirm the earlier lightmicroscopical observations about the distribution of the silverlines and their connections with the locomotoric and effectoric organelles. 3. It seems from our observations that inColpidium colpoda the primary and the secondary meridians of the silverline system are situated in different layers of the cortex. 4. A five-layered structure of the epiplasma containing the secondary meridians of the silverline system was observed in Champy-fixed specimes. 5. The possibility of a fibrillar nature of the silverline system has increased now very much. However, we were not successful in demonstrating some sort of fibrils on the sites of silver deposition in conventionally preparedColpidium colpoda. 6. The location and nature of the silverlines and the significance of our findings are discussed.
