Structural information and vibrational assignments from solvent-induced frequency shifts

Abstrakt: A number of normal vibrations of functional groups and skeletal modes have been measured in different solvents to investigate the usefulness of solvent-induced frequency shifts for structural information purposes. The variability of the shifts is demonstrated on CH and CC-vibrations in a series of carbon hydrogen substituted benzenes dissolved in CC14 and CS2. The shifts can be helpful in vibrational assignments, but for structure elucidation the use appears to be limited.
