Abstrakt: Conclusions During solidification of Al2O3-ZrO2(Y2O3) molten materials, redistribution of the basic components of the material occurs, which leads to the occurrence of nonuniformities. The character of entry of yttrium oxide into it has the strongest influence on the structure and properties of the ceramic. A low Y2O3 content in the charge leads to incomplete stabilization of certain ZrO2 grains and to cracks in the material. With a Y2O3 content of more than 8% new phases — 2Y2O3·Al2O3, 3Y2O3·5Al2O3, and others — almost always occur and with an yttrium oxide content of more than 10–12% the ZrO2(Y2O3) grains match poorly with the sapphire matrix.
