Effect of mineralizing additions on the properties of cordierite-containing ceramics

Abstrakt: Conclusions The data obtained on the action of new mineralizing additives (compositions of watersoluble salts of aluminum and magnesium in combination with ethyl silicate used in stoichiometric ratios for cordierite-forming reactions) enabled us to establish that these additives have a marked influence on the synthesis of cordierite and the sintering of bodies at reduced firing temperatures. The products obtained possess an open porosity of 20–24%, have a low coefficient of thermal expansion, and have a high thermal-shock resistance.
