1.The effects of alternating (50 Hz) and direct current fields on drops of distilled water in a nonpolar hydrocarbon medium were examined.2.The qualitative difference between the processes of dispersion of water drops in a alternating and direct current fields was established. While in an alternating current field dispersion is accompanied by the formation of a very large number of very small drops, in the case of direct current this process consists in the quiescent formation of a single, and less frequently, two or three relatively large drops.3.The existence of a critical voltage, at which the dispersion of the drop ensues, was demonstrated for both cases. The value of the critical voltage depends not only on the interfacial tension between the phases, but also on the size of the drop under the influence of the field. |
