Besides the similarity of the hydrogenation regularities of CO and carbonyl compounds on metals (a similar type of mechanism, an analogous dependence of the catalytic activity on the heat of adsorption qR of the reagent R), important differences have been found that are evident in the value of (qR)opt, the chemical composition of the optimal catalysts, the ability of R to undergo hydrocondensation, etc. These differences are explained by the unequal character and energies of the R-metal bond and the influence of a steric factor. There are two types of hydrogenation reactions: of strongly adsorbed small molecules (CO, N2), and of weakly adsorbed large molecules (acetone, benzene). The analogy between the processes of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and the synthesis of ammonia has been interpreted from this point of view. |
