An investigation has been made of the effect of visible and ultraviolet light on the rate at which carbon monoxide is oxidized on zinc oxide that has been calcined in oxygen at 520‡ C. It was found that light accelerates the reaction over the temperature range 50–210‡ C but retards it above 220‡ C. Moreover, the rate of oxidation of CO on ZnO is zeroth order in oxygen and CO. Measurements of the contact difference potential (CDP) were made in the dark and under illumination (in vacuum and in atmospheres of oxygen, carbon monoxide, and mixtures of these). On the basis of the kinetic data and the results of measuring work functions it is proposed that the limiting step of the reaction is the interaction of adsorbed molecules of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The effect of light consists in converting the oxygen from a stably bound form to a more weakly bound one (more reactive). |
