Functional changes in neurons and their glial satellites in the cat motor cortex were studied after surface de polarization. An increase in the frequency of spontaneous and evoked unit activity in deep layers of the cortex was demonstrated by a microelectrode method and shown to continue for 0.5 h after the end of polarization. Layer by layer investigation of the cortex by cytophotometry using visible light of two wavelengths on sections stained with gallocyanin and chrome alum revealed an increase in the number of reactive phosphate groups of nucleic acids after polarization for 15 min and a decrease in their content 20 min after the end of polarization in pyramidal neurons of layer V, followed by an increase in the interneurons of this layer after 75 min. The number of glial satellites in the same layer was increased near the pyramidal neurons 20 min after the end of polarization and near the interneurons 75 min after its end. In layers II, III, and VI no statistically significant changes in these indices could be found. The results show that the cell population activated by surface polarization is formed of neurons in layer V. Prolonged activation of interneurons and their distinguishing structural features are considered to reflect their organizing role in trace processes. |
