Following extended stimulation with subcutaneous pellets of diethylstilbestrol, small foci of squamous cells appeared among the cervical columnar cells close to the squamo-columnar junction. Treatment with lesser doses of estradiol benzoate did not elicit this response. Serial reconstructions showed that most of the foci of squamous cells anastomosed to form a reticulum which was continuous with the main mass of cervical squamous epithelium. It was concluded that the new squamous cells arose by outgrowth from the stratified squamous epithelium at the squamocolumnar junction, rather than by squamous metaplasia of columnar cells. Histochemical findings supported this conclusion. |
