Abstrakt: The parasexual cycle has been developed in the predatory slime mold,Dictyostelium caveatum, in order to study phagocytosis and recognition mechanisms. Cannibalistic strains were obtained in which self/non-self recognition mechanisms have broken down. These strains are haploid, but often multinucleate. This phenotype was investigated genetically and was shown to be the result of recessive mutations. Analysis of 14 independently derived cannibal strains indicates that this phenotype maps to at least two complementation groups.
