Abstrakt: Various experimental procedures have been used to analyze the hormonal controls of ommochrome content inPieris epidermis. They include topical application of JH I, ligation at various ages (associated with 20-OH ecdysone injection), starvation and ommochrome precursor injection. It is concluded that xanthommatin excretion is triggered by 20-OH ecdysone, while JH I has an antagonistic effect. Xanthommatin accumulation does not reflect an excretory pathway for surplus tryptophan, but it appears to be strictly regulated. JH I can inhibit this process, and 20-OH ecdysone does not seem to be involved. It is suggested that this step is controlled by a neuroendocrine mechanism.
