A characteristic type of deviant mental development, following a hebephrenic clinical course, is described in a group of young schizophrenic patients who were brought up in a pathological family setting. In these “egopaths”, a relatively specific abnormality of maturation and structure of the ego persists. It is hypothesized that this deficiency in selfassertion, existing from the time of infancy, is the result of a biopsychic personality deviation and of a pathological learning process caused by the family. Several conclusions concerning social education are based on this analysis. |
