Flexo-electric effects in liquid crystals

Abstrakt: A novel technique is discussed for measuring the flexo-electric polarisation in the nematic phase. The polarisation is calculated from the pyroelectric response of a cell with the hybrid (homeoplanar) orientation of the nematic director. The temperature behaviour of the flexoelectric coefficients was investigated for MBBA and 5CB. The change in the flexo-electric polarisation induced by an alternating shear flow was also studied for the nematic phase of 5CB and for the nematic, smectic A, and smectic C* phase of a ferroelectric mixture. In addition, the role of the surface polarisation effects is discussed.
