Abstrakt: Thermoelectric generators use the Seebeck effect to produce electrical power from a temperature difference. A device using semiconductor modules has been designed to operate on this principle to generate the power required at a subsea wellhead for instrumentation and valve operation. The hot junction would be mounted on the underwater pipe carrying the crude oil while the cold junction would be in contact with the surrounding seawater. A computer model of the system has been developed and a one metre long 20 W generator constructed using the optimised design.
