In radiotherapy, the time-interval between successive treatments varies between one and fourteen days. A study of the effect of such time-intervals between doses of x-rays has been undertaken on the mouse hair follicle. The regrowth of the hair after irradiation is used as an index of the biological effect of the radiation. The magnitude of the second dose of a split-dose treatment producing the same biological effect as a single dose generally increases with the time-interval between doses, but has a maximum value when the time-interval is four days. Possible reasons for this effect and its significance are discussed. |
