A model is proposed in terms of possible packing and conformations of molecules to explain the different mesogenic behavior of p-sexiphenyl 1 and its 2,3''-dimethyl derivative 2. Single crystal x-ray structure determination and semiempirical calculations of these compounds lend support to the proposed model. |
