Learning stimulates growth in persons of every age. Therefore, appropriate learning experiences must be made available to every person throughout life. These authors report the details of an educational program which was designed and implemented at one retirement community. Resident needs for and interest in such a program were determined. Varied programs based upon resident input were offered during the past 40 months. The essential characteristics of this educational program are outlined here. Formal and informal evaluation attest to the significance of the program for all involved. The serendipitous benefits are many and varied. A national survey attests to the uniqueness of this program. It is recommended that educational programs, based on this successful model, be implemented at every facility providing housing and related services to older people. |
