Role modeling is among the instructional strategies practiced by outstanding community college faculty across academic disciplines. Teaching methodology is valued as much as subject content. Showing students how to learn for themselves is as important as telling them what is important to learn. Anecdotal references, reflections, and observations presuppose role modeling's significant potential, impact, and influence. Is role modeling an effective instructional strategy in business management education? The purpose of this article is to discuss the effectiveness of role modeling as an instructional strategy in business management education in terms of students' performance and their instructor's performance. To that end, two studies were conducted. The first study's findings were unexpected, but questionable. The findings of the second study raised a critical question for practitioners: Why would a practical instructor invest scarce resources in role modeling without the prospect of an optimal return? A considered response is offered. |
